Sign makers for Edinburgh: built-up letters, shop signs and event print

Shop signs in a World Heritage city

Much of central Edinburgh, the Old Town and the New Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with conservation areas and a large number of listed buildings. That shapes shop signs in Edinburgh more than in most UK cities. On the Royal Mile, around Grassmarket or on George Street, what tends to work is individual letters fixed to the fascia, often non-illuminated or halo-lit rather than face-lit, a modest projecting sign and lettering on the glass, rather than a large internally lit box.

Signs usually need advertisement consent from the City of Edinburgh Council as the planning authority, and listed building consent may also apply. We do not apply on your behalf or give legal advice. What we do is prepare the material an application normally needs: a photomontage of the shopfront, dimensioned drawings, fixing details, projection and illumination. A technical drawing or installation visual costs from approx. €85 net.

Letters are cut on our CNC router and laser, assembled and LED-fitted in our workshop, and tested lit before packing. Each set ships with a full-size drilling template and a wiring diagram, so your installer only has to transfer the template to the stone. For fixings into historic masonry, tell us what the planning consent allows and we drill the letters to suit. Ranges: built-up letters and signage manufacturer.

Events, festivals and conferences

Edinburgh fills up with festival-goers every summer, and much of what agencies order for the city is temporary: venue branding, banners, barrier covers, pop-up walls, flags and directional signs that go up for a few weeks. Coated 510 g PVC banners cost approx. €7–13 net per m², mesh for scaffolding approx. €7–17 net per m² depending on weight, feather flags from approx. €47 net with pole.

For conferences, the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) is the main venue in the city; larger shows run at the Royal Highland Centre at Ingliston, next to the airport. We deliver pop-up fabric walls (from approx. €400 net), counters (from approx. €210 net) and roll-ups (from approx. €55 net) within the build-up slot. Rugby at Murrayfield brings sponsor boards, press backdrops and hospitality branding. See exhibition graphics printing and banner printing.

Hotels and offices

Hotels, serviced apartments and offices in Edinburgh order interior signage as much as frontage signs: room numbers, directories and wayfinding in acrylic or Dibond (approx. €35–60 net per m²), frosted window film for meeting rooms (approx. €12–21 net per m²) and wall graphics. For a building-wide scheme, a site survey costs approx. €85 net and is credited against the production order.

Installation and agencies

Our two-person crews cost approx. €42 net per hour and travel for approx. €1 net per km for the round trip, which comes to roughly €4,400 for Edinburgh; so for a single shopfront we deliver ready to fit to a partner fitter or your own installer, and send our crew for larger or multi-site work. Agencies can order on a white label basis, with neutral packaging and an NDA if needed.
