Halo-lit 3D sign elements on an office building facade at night

Built Up Letters – Face Lit, Halo Lit and Non-Illuminated 3D Letters for Signage

Illuminated letters: choose the lighting effect first

The lighting effect decides how the letter is built, so it is the first thing to agree.

  • Face lit letters. The face is translucent acrylic and the LEDs shine forward through it. The lettering reads clearly from a distance at night, which suits high streets and retail parks.
  • Halo lit letters. The face and sides are closed (dibond or aluminium), and the LEDs light the wall behind the letter. You get a soft outline of light and a solid, metallic look by day. Halo lit letters need a stand-off from the wall and a reasonably even, light-coloured background.
  • Face and halo lit. Both effects in one letter, for entrances and reception walls where the sign is seen close up and from afar.
  • Non-illuminated letters. CNC-routed dibond, acrylic or thick foam PVC, fixed on stand-off spacers or flat to the wall.

Not sure which suits your façade? Send a photo of the wall and we will suggest the effect and the letter depth.

How we make built up acrylic letters and channel letters

Our plant in Wieluń, Poland, has made signs since 1991, and most letter work happens on machines we own:

  • CNC routing and laser cutting of acrylic faces, dibond backs and foam PVC
  • 3D printing of channel letter bodies in one piece, with no bending or welding of the return; the body is printed, fitted with LEDs and closed with a face
  • Acrylic edge polishing and bending, painting in RAL colours, vinyl overlays for metallic or chrome effects
  • A 3D scanner for matching an existing logo or letter shape when no artwork exists

Our studio checks the artwork, vectorises a logo from a bitmap if needed (approx. €26 net) and prepares a production drawing with letter sizes, depths, LED layout and fixing points before anything is cut.

Built up letters trade supply

For sign makers and shopfitters we supply letters ready to fit: each letter labelled and packed separately, power supplies and wiring marked, fixing points shown on the drawing. Because we also print large format, we can print a full-size paper fixing template for drilling. Orders go out in neutral packaging with no logo of ours if you resell them. How trade orders work is described on our white label printing page.

If the letters sit on a panel or above a light box, we make both together; see light box manufacturer and the wider range on our sign manufacturer page.

Letters travel in our own vans across Europe or by courier and dedicated courier. We ship to the UK and Ireland and handle export paperwork with our forwarders; ask us about delivery terms. Installation is done by our crews, with a platform reaching 18 m, or by our partner network and local firms in your country. For chains needing identical lettering in many locations, see retail signage rollout.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between face lit and halo lit letters?

Face lit letters glow through a translucent front face. Halo lit letters have a closed face and light the wall behind them, creating an outline of light. Face lit reads better from far away; halo lit looks more discreet and premium.

How much do illuminated letters cost?

At 30 cm high, face lit letters start at approx. €46 net per character, halo lit at approx. €55 and face and halo at approx. €70. Each extra 10 cm of height adds approx. €11 net per character.

Can built up letters be used outdoors?

Yes. Illuminated letters for façades are built with sealed LEDs and outdoor power supplies. Coated styrofoam letters are for interiors and events only.

Do you supply letters to trade sign makers?

Yes, supply-only, labelled, with drawings and fixing details, in neutral packaging on request.

Do illuminated letters need planning permission?

In the UK and Ireland, illuminated signage often needs consent from the local planning authority. Check with your council; we provide drawings and lighting details for the application.

Can you match an existing logo without vector files?

Yes. Our studio vectorises logos from bitmaps, and for physical objects we can use our 3D scanner.
