In short: advertising is part of marketing
The simplest way to remember it: marketing is everything a company does so that a customer buys and comes back. The classic framework speaks of four areas – product, price, distribution and promotion. Advertising is one of the promotion tools, alongside PR, sales promotion and direct selling.
That leads to a difference in approach. An advertising agency is usually briefed with 'prepare a campaign that says this and that'. A marketing agency more often hears 'we need more enquiries from the website' or 'online shop sales have stalled', and looks for the problem itself: website traffic, the offer, the price, customer service.
That is the textbook distinction. In the market both names coexist and many companies use them interchangeably.
A comparison in six points
| Criterion | Advertising agency | Marketing agency |
|---|---|---|
| Main question | what to say to customers and how | how to win and keep customers |
| Typical services | creative, slogans, key visual, spots, material design, media buying, production oversight | strategy, research, SEO, search and social campaigns, content, email, analytics, websites |
| Output | a campaign and materials: ads, posters, flyers, signage, stands | an action plan, website traffic, leads, sales, reports |
| How results are measured | reach, awareness, message recall | conversions, cost per acquisition, return on spend |
| Rhythm of work | more often project-based, around a campaign | more often ongoing, on a monthly retainer |
| Where it operates | offline and online | mainly online, though the strategy covers everything |
The table shows typical profiles, not rigid categories. You will meet advertising agencies that run online campaigns and marketing agencies that design flyers. What matters is knowing, before signing, what the agency does itself and what it subcontracts.

What a marketing agency does
A marketing agency's services most often include:
- marketing strategy – who the target customer is, how to position the offer, which channels to invest in,
- SEO, i.e. work on the website's visibility in search results,
- paid campaigns in search engines and on social platforms, with audience targeting and budgets,
- running social media profiles and creating content: posts, articles, short videos,
- email marketing and automation – newsletters, message sequences after sign-up,
- analytics – measuring where customers come from and what each one costs,
- websites and landing pages, often together with a development company.
On websites: if you simply need a decent company website, our sister service weblango.com builds them, and clients who order signage from us use it too. How to split a budget between print and online is discussed in print advertising or online.
- 01Brief
Description, sizes, site photos and deadline — a few sentences are enough.
- 02Design and quote

- 03Approval
You approve the design; for brand colours we provide a proof.
- 04Production
35+ machines in our own plant in Poland: 3.2 m UV print, CNC, laser, 3D, sewing.
- 05Installation or delivery
Own crews and vehicles across Europe, partner network, couriers worldwide.
Which to choose – some typical situations
- You are opening a service business or a shop. First the sign, window graphics, a banner, flyers, business cards – a job for a sign manufacturer with a designer. A Google Business Profile and a simple social media presence are often enough to start, and a marketing agency becomes useful when you want to develop that. A step-by-step plan: local marketing for a small business.
- You sell mainly online. Here a marketing agency is the natural choice: traffic, conversion, paid campaigns. The physical materials that remain are packaging, logo tape and flyers for parcels.
- You are launching a product into a retail chain. An advertising or BTL agency prepares the concept, and a manufacturer produces the POS materials and delivers them to the stores.
- You are changing your logo and image. A creative agency or design studio designs the identity; then everything physical has to be replaced: signs, panels, vehicle graphics, print.
- You want to do everything at once and have no time. Then look for a full-service agency or a single coordinator who brings the suppliers together.
How to check what an agency really does
A company's name says little, so have a few questions ready before the first meeting. The answers will quickly show whether you are talking to an advertising agency, a marketing agency or something in between.
- What do you do with your own team, and what do you subcontract? An honest agency will readily say it has design in-house and orders print from a manufacturer.
- How will you measure results? A marketing agency will give specific metrics, such as the number of enquiries or the cost per customer. An advertising agency talks more about reach and awareness.
- How are we billed? Retainer, project, hours, commission on the media budget, a margin on production – each model makes sense, but it has to be clear.
- Who will be my account manager, and how many people will work on my account?
- Can I see similar work? Ideally from your sector or of similar scale.
- Who owns the designs and ad accounts when the relationship ends? Especially important for online campaigns and for logos.

How it looks from our side
We are a large format printer and visual signage manufacturer with our own design studio – we make what you can see and touch: designs, print, illuminated signage, wayfinding, exhibition and POS materials, plus installation and dispatch to multiple sites. We work both directly with companies and for advertising and marketing agencies that need a supplier for their clients.
One thing links both worlds: measuring results. Print advertising can be measured too, for example with QR codes and dedicated phone numbers – we cover this in how to measure the effectiveness of flyers, banners and signs.
