In a second-hand shop or an outlet, customers come by the calendar: delivery day, markdown day, the last day before a new delivery when “everything is €2”. A regular knows it by heart, but a newcomer has to see it from the street, and this week’s dates, not last week’s. That is why the most important advertising in this trade is not an expensive fascia but displays where the date and price are easy to change.
The second point is budget. Margins are low and premises are often temporary, in retail units and on arterial roads out of town. So we advise starting with what can be seen from a car and works every day: a banner, a flag, an A-board, proper section signs. An illuminated sign makes sense once you know you are staying in the unit for a few years. For an outlet chain we work differently: one design, a pack for every shop and the same colours in every town.
1. From the street and from the car
A used-clothing shop often sits on a main road out of town or in a unit on a housing estate. A driver has two seconds to read what the place is. Put only three things on the banner: “Second hand” or “Outlet”, one line such as “New stock every Monday” and an arrow to the entrance. A phone number and web address cannot be read from a distance anyway.
- Banner for the facade or fence→A 4 × 1 m coated PVC banner is approx. €55 net (4 m² × approx. €13), with eyelets every 50 cm included. It will last several seasons. How to choose the material is covered in our guide [how much does a banner cost](/poradnik/ile-kosztuje-baner-reklamowy).
- Beach flag by the road→A moving flag catches a driver’s eye faster than a static banner. Winder Midi 70 × 340 cm from approx. €75 net, taken in after closing.
- Light box with the name, if you are staying→In autumn and winter the shop closes after dark. An illuminated 300 × 60 cm sign from approx. €570 net shows that you are open.

2. Window, deliveries and prices
This is where most of the changes happen. The fixed elements (name, opening hours, the weekly calendar) we do once in vinyl. The variable ones (delivery date, current markdown) go on displays you can swap yourself in five minutes. A magnetic board works best: you move the days of the week and price points by hand, with no weekly printing.
- Window graphics: name, hours, weekly calendar→Printed monomeric vinyl, 6 m² is approx. €50 net (6 m² × approx. €8). Leave the middle of the glass for mannequins showing the new stock.
- Price board with magnetic strips→Strips such as “Mon: new stock”, “–50%”, “everything €3” on a steel board or door. Printed magnetic sheet approx. €21–32 net per m², and one square metre gives dozens of strips.
- A-board with a swappable poster→Put it on the pavement in the morning and change the poster in seconds thanks to the snap frame. Double-sided B1 A-board from approx. €120 net, a new B1 poster from approx. €14 net.
3. Shop floor
The stock varies, so the signage has to be simple and permanent. Large section signs visible from the entrance, size dividers on the rails and one place for reduced items. Cardboard dump bins for “everything €2” work better than a table, because customers dig through the stock instead of spreading it round the whole shop.
- Section signs: women, men, children, shoes, home→Suspended above the rails, printed 3 mm PVC. Approx. €21–33 net per m², legible from the other end of the shop.
- Size dividers and price hangers→For clothes rails: S, M, L, XL or price points. Made of HIPS, they do not bend like card and survive hundreds of moves.
- Dump bins for reduced stock→Printed corrugated board approx. €13–21 net per m², foldable. On a “everything €2” day you stand them in the aisle, then fold them flat.
- Fitting room and till signs→An arrow to the fitting rooms, the returns policy, payment methods. Same material and style as the section signs.

4. Till and regular customers
In a second-hand shop a regular is someone who comes in on every delivery day. It is worth rewarding her and giving her something to take away. A cotton bag with your logo fits the idea of reuse, and customers then carry it when shopping, including at other shops.
- Cotton bags with your logo→One-colour print, 100 bags from approx. €210 net. You can sell them at the till or give them away with bigger purchases.
- Stamp-style loyalty cards→Business-card size: ten stamps, a discount on the next purchase. 500 cards approx. €15 net.
- QR code sticker linking to the delivery group→On the door and by the till. Customers join your social media group and get notified about new deliveries.
5. Leaflets for the neighbourhood
A leaflet with the weekly calendar (when the delivery comes, when the markdown starts) ends up on the fridge. It is one of the few printed items people keep of their own accord. Hand it out at the till and put it through letterboxes within a few hundred metres.
- Leaflet or folded leaflet with the delivery calendar→A6 or DL. For example, a 6-page DL leaflet, 1,000 copies, is approx. €90 net; simpler leaflets are priced on request.
- Posters for community noticeboards→For the opening or a big seasonal delivery. 10 A2 posters approx. €28 net, enough for nearby blocks of flats and shops willing to put one up.

From our experience — what to watch out for
- Keep a banner seen from the road to three pieces of information at most. A driver will not read the hours, phone number and a list of sections.
- Anything you change weekly should go on magnets or in a snap frame. Printing new graphics for every markdown will eat the whole budget.
- Take the beach flag in at night and in strong wind. It wears out not from rain but from flapping round the clock.
- Hang section signs high. At eye level they will be hidden by the clothes rails anyway.
- Repeat the delivery day everywhere: in the window, on the leaflet, on the loyalty card and in the online group. People only remember it after seeing it several times.
