Guest houses and farm stays share one problem: the guest is coming for the first time, often in the dark, along an unnamed country lane, and the satnav gives up somewhere 'in the vicinity'. So the first and most important advertising isn't a banner but a proper sign at the turning and another at the gate. It sounds obvious, but online reviews start with the journey there.
The second thing is atmosphere. People choose a farm stay for peace, nature and home cooking, so the signage shouldn't look like a supermarket. Dibond printed with a wood effect, simple lettering, natural colours – that works. And finally, things that sell themselves during a stay: your own honey, juices and preserves with a nice label, and a gift voucher. If you're just starting out, see our list of [advertising for a new business](/poradnik/reklama-dla-nowej-firmy).
1. Approach and entrance
A sign by a public road is often a matter for the highway authority – wherever you want to put a sign on someone else's land or on highway land, you need consent. On your own land it's simpler, but local rules can still impose limits. Ask the local authority before ordering the structure.
- Directional sign at the turning→Name, arrow, distance in metres – dibond on a galvanised frame, resistant to rain and frost.
- Sign at the gate→The property name and number, readable from a car. Dibond or PVC, in colours that suit the house.
- Totem at the entrance→For a larger property – a freestanding sign with name, category and information about the restaurant or stables.
- House number→Large, readable digits at the gate. Couriers and guests using satnav will thank you.

2. On the property
On a large plot guests look for reception, parking, the playground, the barbecue and their cottage. A few consistent signs save you dozens of questions in season and 'where do we park?' phone calls.
- Cottage and room signs→Names or numbers on the doors – dibond or acrylic, in one style for the whole property.
- Map board of the property and area→Site plan, trails, shop, lake, attractions within a few kilometres – by the car park or reception.
- Funding plaque→If the property was built or renovated with a grant, the agreement usually requires a plaque or poster. Take the dimensions and elements from the programme guidelines.
3. Season and outdoor promotion
A banner on a roadside fence saying 'vacancies' or 'home-cooked meals' works especially where lots of tourists drive past. Put it up for the season and take it down in winter – it'll last longer. How to fix it so it doesn't tear is explained in [how to hang a banner on a fence](/poradnik/jak-powiesic-baner-na-ogrodzeniu).
- Fence banner→'Vacancies', 'rooms', 'fish from our own pond' – for the season, with eyelets every 50 cm.
- Flags at the entrance→Feather flags or flagpole flags visible from the road – good for the start of the season and events.

4. Interiors and rooms
Guests spend more time in their rooms than at reception. A picture of a local landscape or a wall mural of the surrounding countryside lasts for years and doesn't cost a fortune.
- Canvas prints for the rooms→Photos of the area, old photographs of the farm, nature motifs – a series in one style for every room.
- Wall mural in the dining or common room→One wall with a panorama of the countryside or a forest creates atmosphere in the dining room without a refurbishment.
5. For guests and for sale
A guest who leaves with your honey, business card and map comes back or recommends you. Your own products with a proper label sell better than a jar with handwriting, and can be left in the room as a small welcome gift.
- Labels for honey and preserves→A label with the farm name, ingredients and date. For small batches we print short runs.
- Area maps for guests→A folded map with attractions, trails and your recommended places – guests carry it throughout their stay.
- Leaflets and business cards→To leave in the rooms, or at the local shop or tourist information office.
- Stay vouchers→A weekend at a farm stay is a popular gift. A voucher on heavy paper, numbered, with an expiry date.
- Branded cotton bags→For farm shopping – eggs, vegetables, preserves. The bag goes back to town with the guest and keeps working.

From our experience — what to watch out for
- Drive the route with satnav the way a guest would – wherever you hesitate, a sign is needed.
- Put less text and bigger letters on a roadside sign. The driver has two seconds to read it.
- Make outdoor signs from dibond, not PVC. PVC in full sun can warp after one season.
- Design preserve labels with a blank field for the date and variety – one print run will serve many batches.
- Take seasonal banners down for winter and store them rolled, not folded. They'll last several seasons.
