A hire company earns money on cars that are out on the road, and customers usually find it online or through a referral: a garage that needs a courtesy car, a hotel, a removals firm. The branch doesn't have to pull in passing trade like a shop, but it does have to be easy to find from a map pin, including in the evening and at weekends when someone drops a car off out of hours.
Most of the decisions are about the fleet itself. Cars often go back to the leasing company or are sold after a few years, and plenty of customers don't want to drive to a wedding in a car covered in advertising. Small decals and magnetic signs work well here. Vans are a different story: they travel the whole region, sit outside blocks of flats all day during house moves and are the cheapest advertising space a hire company owns. Add to that the small items inside the car that save trouble, starting with a sticker by the fuel filler.
1. Branch and car park
Customers arrive by taxi or get dropped off by a friend and look for the branch by its address. The sign has to be visible from the street, and the car park has to make it obvious where to park on return and what to do with the keys out of hours.
- Light box above the branch→Single-sided light box from approx. €320 net per m². Illumination helps when a car is collected in the evening or before 7 am in winter.
- Window graphics→Opening hours, 24-hour phone number, vehicle types: cars, minibuses, vans. Printed vinyl approx. €6–12 net per m².
- ‘Car return’ and customer parking signs→UV-printed aluminium composite (Dibond) approx. €35–55 net per m², at the entrance and above the bays. Customers stop leaving cars in someone else’s space.
- Out-of-hours return instructions→A plaque next to the key drop box: where to leave the car, where the key goes, which number to call. A small thing that saves late-night phone calls.

2. Fleet
Cars that go back to the leasing company get a different treatment from vans the business will keep for years. In both cases we use film that can be removed without damaging the paint, provided it comes off within a reasonable time.
- Van and light commercial livery→Sides and rear with the name, phone number and website. Cast vinyl approx. €19–29 net per m² plus laminate. A removals van stands outside a block of flats all day and everyone looks at it.
- Discreet decals for cars→A small logo on the rear window or by the door handle. The car doesn’t look like a company vehicle, but the customer still remembers where it came from. Contour-cut vinyl approx. €6–12 net per m².
- Magnetic door signs→For short-term hire cars or vehicles being trialled in the fleet. Printed magnetic sheet approx. €21–32 net per m², off in a second.
3. Inside the car
The customer is driving an unfamiliar car. The less they have to guess, the fewer damage claims and phone calls. The most expensive mistake is filling up with the wrong fuel, and a sticker costing a few cents prevents it.
- Fuel-type sticker by the filler cap→A large ‘DIESEL’ or ‘PETROL’ on the filler flap and next to the ignition. Fuel- and wash-resistant film, approx. €6–12 net per m².
- Information stickers in the cabin→No smoking, breakdown assistance number, QR code to the car’s manual. On the inside of the window or on the door pillar.
- Mirror hanger at handover→‘Car ready’, booking number, phone. The customer gets in and sees straight away that someone has thought about them. Die-cut from HIPS, priced by quantity.
- Document wallet in the glovebox→Rental agreement, registration document, insurance and what to do after an accident, all in one place. 100 A4 folders approx. €135 net.

4. Winning customers
Hire customers often come through a partner: a garage, a hotel, a travel agent, a removals firm. Give your partners something they can stand on the counter, and your number will be to hand the moment someone asks about a car.
- Leaflet holder for a partner’s counter→Clear acrylic, laser-cut and bent, with your logo. It stands at a hotel reception or in a garage. Priced by size and quantity.
- Leaflets with prices and terms→Daily rates, deposit, documents required, contact details. 1,000 DL leaflets approx. €90 net.
- Roll-up banner at a hotel or airport→For an off-site handover desk or a travel trade show. Roll-up 100 × 200 cm from approx. €65 net.
- Business cards with the 24-hour number→One in the wallet in every car and a stack for partners. 500 cards approx. €15 net.

From our experience — what to watch out for
- Brand cars discreetly and vans in full. A family hiring a car for a holiday doesn’t want to drive a billboard, while everyone looks at a van anyway.
- A fuel-type sticker by the filler is the cheapest protection against a very expensive repair. Put one in every car in the fleet.
- Before a car goes back to the leasing company, remove the film within the time the contract allows. Film left for years in the sun is harder to take off.
- Put the out-of-hours return number on the window and the business card. Most anxious calls are about returns.
- Leave partners something that stands up rather than lies flat. Loose leaflets on a counter end up in the bin within a week, a branded leaflet holder stays for months.
