Printed packing tape – minimum order and prices

What logo tape costs – an example from our price list

The most frequently ordered option is tape 48 mm wide and 60 m long on the roll. With flexographic print in three Pantone colours and a 395.6 mm repeat, a batch of 36 rolls costs approx. €290 net. Per roll: €290 ÷ 36 ≈ €8 net.

Is that a lot? It depends how you look at it. If sealing one parcel takes approx. 1 m of tape, a 60 m roll seals approx. 60 parcels. That is approx. €0.13 per parcel (€8 ÷ 60). For that, every shipment carries your logo all the way – from the warehouse, through the sorting hub, to the customer's desk.

Other quantities, widths or numbers of colours are quoted on request, see printed packing tape. The product is also described on the printed logo packing tape page.

Why you cannot order 5 rolls

Printed tape is produced by flexography, i.e. from printing plates – one for each colour. Making the plates and setting up the press costs the same whether we print a few dozen or a few hundred rolls. With just a few rolls that fixed cost would eat the whole budget, and a roll would cost several times more than sensible packaging.

That is why the price breaks start at a few dozen rolls. A repeat order with the same design is simpler to set up, because the artwork is already approved. For a small online shop, 36 rolls is usually several months' worth of shipments, and tape keeps well if stored somewhere dry, away from radiators and sunlight.

If you send a few parcels a week, to be honest printed tape may be overkill for now. A logo sticker on the carton will be cheaper, and you can move to tape once volumes grow.

The repeat is the length after which the pattern starts again. With a repeat of approx. 40 cm the logo appears on the tape roughly every 40 cm, so on a typical carton you will see it at least once on every strip. We fit the design to the repeat so the logo is not cut off halfway.

Which designs work on tape

There is little space on tape, and flexo printing has its limits. From experience:

  • A simple logo and short text. Company name, web address, perhaps a strapline. Nobody reads long sentences on tape.
  • Flat colours, no tonal transitions. Gradients, shadows and photos print poorly. A logo with a gradient is better simplified to a flat version.
  • Contrast with the base. Black, white and dark colours look good on brown tape. Light yellow on brown almost disappears.
  • Minimum line weight and type size. Very thin lines and small text can fill in with ink. We will advise on what to thicken when we look at the design.
  • The logo as a vector. Plate-making needs a vector file. If you do not have one, read why printers ask for a vector logo – our studio can vectorise it for you.

Give colours as Pantone references. If your brand has strict colour guidelines, mention it in your enquiry.

How to order logo tape

  1. Choose the tape width, length and colour (if unsure, go for the standard 48 mm × 60 m, brown or white).
  2. Decide the number of print colours and give them as Pantone references.
  3. Send the logo as a vector or ask us to design it.
  4. You receive a visual showing the pattern on the repeat for approval.
  5. After approval we start production and dispatch the finished rolls by courier.

Tape works well with other packaging elements: printed mailer boxes, kraft wrapping paper or a thank-you label. If you ship to many locations, we can also handle packing and multi-address dispatch.

Questions and answers

Other questions we often get

Does printed tape stick well?

Printed tape has the same adhesive as standard packing tape of the same type; the print is on the outside. On recycled cartons and in a cold warehouse it may hold less well, in which case a stronger adhesive is chosen. Tell us the conditions you pack in.

Can I order tape with several different designs?

Each design needs its own printing plates, so each is treated as a separate order with its own minimum. If you want to show several things, it is better to fit them into one repeat, e.g. logo and web address alternating.

How long does logo tape take?

We give the lead time in the quote, because it depends on quantity and whether the plates are already made. Repeat orders with the same design go faster, because there is no new artwork or approval round.

Does logo tape protect a parcel against tampering?

Partly. Printed tape cannot be replaced with plain tape without it showing, so the customer will notice straight away if the parcel has been opened. It is not, however, a tamper-evident seal in the technical sense.

Which adhesive: acrylic, hot-melt or solvent?

Acrylic is the cheapest and copes well with sunlight and ageing, but holds less well on cold, dusty cartons. Hot-melt bonds strongly and quickly, so it suits packing from a dispenser and heavier parcels. Solvent performs best at low temperatures and on difficult surfaces. For typical e-commerce shipping from a heated warehouse, acrylic or hot-melt is usually enough.

Can a QR code be printed on tape?

Yes, but it has to be large and high-contrast enough, because in flexo the small squares of the code can fill in with ink. We always check a QR code on the artwork and advise whether it will scan.
