A gate, a railing or a fence stays with a house for decades and everyone sees it. It is a metalworker’s best calling card, provided someone knows who made it. That is why in this trade the mark on the product itself matters: a small, durable plate with the company name on the gate leaf or by the side gate. A neighbour who likes the gate will see it and call.
A metalwork shop or forge is usually on a side road or on the owner’s property. Customers come to order a gate, talk about the design and see what you have already made. A catalogue of designs and completed jobs helps them, and by the road – a sample fence panel with a plate and phone number. Welding shops working for businesses need a proper quote pack instead: folder, references, business cards. Art blacksmiths also travel to craft fairs and demonstrations.
1. Workshop by the road
At the workshop, what works best is what you can see from a passing car: a sign at the gate, a banner on the fence and a sample fence panel or side gate set up by the road. On the sign say what you do (“gates, fences, railings”) because a company name alone tells nothing to someone looking for a contractor.
- Company sign at the entrance→3 mm aluminium composite panel (Dibond) with UV print, approx. €35–55 net per m². Screw it to posts or straight onto your own fence.
- Banner on the workshop fence→A 4 × 1 m coated banner is 4 m² × approx. €13, so approx. €55 net. For see-through fences, the blockout version.
- Plate with phone number on a sample panel→Set up a fence panel or side gate by the road as a sample and fix a sign with your number to it. It works as a small display around the clock.

2. The mark on the product
A plate with the company name on a gate is discreet advertising for years. The most durable is laser-engraved or router-engraved in aluminium. When the product needs a rating plate (for example automatic gates and structures) its content comes from the documentation and regulations the maker knows. We make it so it survives rain, frost and a pressure washer.
- Maker’s plates and rating plates for gates and structures→Deep laser engraving approx. €1.10 net per dm², mechanical engraving with a router approx. €5 net per metre of tool path. Serial marking with numbering from 100 pcs starts at approx. €0.25 net each.
- Logo stickers for railings, baskets and serial products→The cheaper option for small items. Laminated film, contour-cut, lasts several years outdoors.
- UV printing on your steel and aluminium panels→Gate infill panels with graphics, house numbers on a side gate, fence panels with a motif. UV printing on supplied sheet metal, aluminium and composite approx. €19–28 net per m².
3. Vehicle and crew
A vehicle with a trailer carrying gates to installation is seen across the whole district. A crew in branded T-shirts and sweatshirts installing a gate looks like a company, not people moonlighting after hours. Remember that welding clothing wears out fast – print on the T-shirts and sweatshirts worn for installation and at the customer’s, not on protective gear.
- Livery for a van or a vehicle with trailer→Cast vinyl with UV print approx. €19–29 net per m², polymeric laminate approx. €8 net per m².
- Branded T-shirts and sweatshirts→A4 print on T-shirts approx. €3.30 net each for 20–49 pcs, on a sweatshirt from approx. €4 net.

4. Offers for homeowners and businesses
A private customer wants to see designs and completed work. A business you weld structures for looks at references, certifications and how the quote is presented. A catalogue does the job in both cases, and a folder and business card complete the set for tenders and meetings with the client.
- Catalogue of gate, fence and railing designs→Saddle-stitched A4 catalogue, 16 pages, 100 copies approx. €220 net. Your photos, design number, a short note on the finish.
- Presentation folders for business clients→A4 folder with matt lamination, 100 pcs approx. €135 net. Quote, drawings and references in one place.
- Business cards→500 double-sided cards approx. €15 net.
5. Art blacksmithing: fairs, demonstrations, restoration
Art blacksmiths sell at craft fairs, fêtes and heritage craft demonstrations. Outdoors you need a gazebo, and behind the table a roll-up banner with your best work. For restoring historic fences and railings, a 3D scan of a missing element is useful: it becomes the model for reproducing the ornament.
- Branded gazebo for fairs and demonstrations→3 × 3 m pop-up gazebo with full print from approx. €750 net. Goes up in a few minutes.
- Roll-up banner with your work→Roll-up banner 85 × 200 cm from approx. €55 net. Photos of gates and railings instead of long text.
- 3D scanning of parts for restoration→A scan of the surviving ornament, a 3D model and a print as a pattern. Modelling approx. €45 net per hour, 3D printing approx. €14 net per machine hour.
- Model or mock-up before forging→A scale 3D print of a detail lets you show the customer the design before the forge is lit.

From our experience — what to watch out for
- Fit the company plate on the gate at eye level, on the street side. Hidden by the hinge, it advertises nothing.
- Send the logo for engraving as a vector file. Laser and router follow curves; a blurry photo gives a blurry engraving.
- UV print on metal needs a degreased surface and, if powder-coated, a fully cured coating. Bring a sample from the same batch first.
- For the catalogue, photograph gates from the same height and on an overcast day. In full sun steel throws glare and shadows that look bad in print.
- Take a gazebo with side walls to a fair. Wrought ironwork is heavy, and the wind knocks over light frames without weights.
