A garden or a block-paved drive is done once in many years, and customers choose a company mainly by what they have seen at the neighbours’. The job takes from a few days to a few weeks, in full view of the street. That is the best moment to advertise: passers-by stop, watch the progress and ask who is doing it. If there is a banner with your number on the fence and a liveried van next to it, they have the answer straight away.
The trade is seasonal. Customers start looking for a contractor in February and March, when they are thinking about spring, and by April good crews have their diary full until summer. So the printed material (leaflets, catalogue, new business cards) is prepared in winter, and in season all that is left is making sure there is a banner on every job.
1. In winter, before the season
January and February are the time to print. Leaflets go out to new housing estates where someone will be doing a drive and a garden this year, and the project catalogue comes in handy at every meeting. A garden design voucher, in turn, makes a good Christmas present – people buy it for their parents or new neighbours.
- Leaflets and brochures for housing estates→Roll-folded DL leaflet, 1,000 pcs, approx. €90 net. A few photos of your work, the services you offer, a phone number.
- Catalogue of projects and paving patterns→Saddle-stitched A4 catalogue, 16 pages, 100 copies approx. €220 net. The customer chooses a drive pattern from your photos, not from a manufacturer’s generic brochure.
- Business cards→500 double-sided cards approx. €15 net.
- Garden design vouchers→A present for Christmas, Mother’s Day or a housewarming. Numbered, with a space for the expiry date – quoted individually by quantity and paper.

2. On the job at the customer’s
With the owner’s permission, we hang a banner on the fence or push a board into the lawn by the entrance. For paving, a small board on stakes saying something like “Driveway by…” works well, because it stands where passers-by look – at the entrance. When the job is done, you take it all to the next site.
- Banner for the customer’s fence→A 3 × 1 m coated banner is 3 m² × approx. €13, so approx. €40 net. For see-through fences, the blockout version, approx. €9–16 net per m².
- Board on stakes for the lawn→Dibond or PVC with UV print, in a small format. Dibond costs approx. €35–55 net per m² and survives many seasons of being moved around.
- Beach flag at the site entrance→Winder Midi 70 × 340 cm with pole from approx. €75 net. With a ground spike it goes up in the lawn in a minute.
3. Van, trailer and machinery
A landscaping crew travels with a trailer, a mini digger or a mower on the back. A van and trailer together are several metres of advertising driving round housing estates every day. On the vehicle we use cast vinyl with laminate. For the trailer cover we print the graphic on 680 g PVC tarpaulin, approx. €13–22 net per m², because ordinary vinyl won’t hold on a tarpaulin.
- Van and trailer livery→Cast vinyl with UV print approx. €19–29 net per m², laminate approx. €8 net per m². On metal trailer sides, vinyl is fine too.
- Magnetic signs for staff cars→For when part of the crew drives their own cars. Magnetic sheet approx. €21–32 net per m².
- Logo stickers for mowers, plate compactors and kit→Contour-cut from film that stands up to rain and sun. Branded kit is easier to recognise, and harder to sell on if it goes missing.

4. The crew on site
On site and in the garden you work in the sun, so a T-shirt and a cap are needed anyway. Make them branded – with several people on the customer’s property it is obvious at once who is from your company.
- Branded T-shirts→A4 print approx. €2.35 net each for 50–99 pcs. Light colours for summer, dark ones for paving work.
- Baseball caps→Transfer print on a cap approx. €2.60 net each, from 25 pcs.
5. Fairs, shows and the yard
Spring garden fairs, allotment open days and home and building shows draw people who are going to change something in their garden this year. A gazebo, a roll-up banner with photos of your work and a catalogue to hand out are enough. At the yard where you keep equipment and materials, a proper sign helps – especially if you also sell soil, bark or paving on site.
- Branded gazebo for fairs→3 × 3 m pop-up gazebo with full print from approx. €750 net. It keeps off rain and sun, and from a distance people can see who you are.
- Roll-up banner with photos of your work→Roll-up banner 85 × 200 cm from approx. €55 net. Also works well in the office and at meetings with developers.
- Company sign at the yard and depot→Name, opening hours, phone number. Dibond with UV print, screwed to the gate or fence.

From our experience — what to watch out for
- Order leaflets and the catalogue in January. In March the whole trade prints at once, and by then you should be answering the phone.
- Always photograph jobs from the same spot: before, during and after. A series of three photos of a drive sells better than one nice one.
- Fix the banner to the customer’s fence with cable ties through every eyelet. String loosens after a week in the wind, and the banner starts tearing at the edge.
- Don’t stick vinyl on a trailer tarpaulin – it starts peeling the first time it is rolled up. Instead we print a whole new tarpaulin with the graphic.
- Take the beach flag off site overnight. It isn’t cheap and it is easy to pull out of a lawn.
