Glossary: wobbler, shelf stopper, shelf liner, hanger, price tag
Names in the POS business overlap, and the same item may be called different things by different retailers. This is how we use them day to day:
- Wobbler – a small graphic (usually a circle, oval or product shape) on a clear, springy PET arm. The arm is stuck to the price rail or shelf, and the graphic moves gently with every breath of air. The movement is the whole point of a wobbler.
- Shelf stopper (shelf blade) – a rigid panel mounted at right angles to the shelf, projecting into the aisle. A shopper walking along the fixture sees it from the side before reaching the product.
- Shelf liner / shelf strip – a long, narrow strip with graphics on the shelf edge, often slid into the price rail. It marks out the brand zone along the whole fixture. Details in our shelf and price strips offer.
- Hanger – a hanging graphic: from the ceiling above the aisle (dangler), from a hook next to the product or around a bottle neck.
- Price tag / promo marker – a small item next to the price announcing a discount or new product.
All of these belong to the wider group of POS materials – if you are just getting to grips with the subject, start with what is POS display material.
Materials: HIPS, PVC, PET, board, magnetic sheet
| Material | Where it works | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| HIPS 0.8 mm | wobblers, shelf stoppers, price markers | light, cheap, easy to cut to shape, takes print well | may bend at larger sizes |
| Foamed PVC 3 mm | shelf stoppers, larger panels, ceiling hangers | rigid, does not warp, durable | heavier, harder to stick to a rail |
| Clear PET | wobbler arms, clear overlays | springy, transparent | not a graphic carrier in itself |
| Board / cardboard | short promotions, single-use materials | cheapest, easy to recycle | dislikes moisture, chillers and handling |
| Magnetic sheet | media on metal shelving | fitting and removal without adhesive | only works on steel |
| Synthetic paper | strips, inserts for price rails | waterproof, tear-resistant | too soft for a stopper |
For a typical wobbler or stopper we usually choose UV-printed HIPS – in our price list approx. €16–24 net per m² depending on area. 3 mm PVC costs approx. €21–33 net per m², and we use it when the item is larger or has to stay up longer. UV print resists abrasion without laminate, so the item withstands handling by shoppers and shelf cleaning.

Fixing to the rail and shelf
The fixing method must be agreed before production, because it determines the shape of the item.
- Double-sided tape on the arm – the most common for wobblers. The arm is stuck to the price rail or the underside of the shelf. Important: the adhesive must hold on the plastic rail, including in chillers.
- Insert into the price rail (C-profile) – the item has a bottom tab the height of the rail and slides in like a price ticket. It leaves no marks and takes seconds to swap.
- Clip or hook – fitted to the edge of a glass or wire shelf.
- Magnet – on metal shelving and fridges.
- Hook, cord, suction cup – for hangers; for ceiling danglers retailers often have their own suspension system.
The most common mistake: designing in a vacuum, without checking which rail the stores use. The same graphic has to fit different retailers, and rails vary in height. Before ordering the full run, make 2–3 test pieces and try them in a real store.
Retailer requirements
Large retailers have their own rules for materials from manufacturers and distributors. We do not quote specific figures, because each retailer has different ones and changes them from time to time – but they usually cover the same things:
- size and projection – a stopper must not block a trolley or hide neighbouring products,
- no covering the price or legally required labels,
- fixing method – often only inserts or specified holders, no adhesive on the rail,
- material – some retailers require a specific material or no sharp edges,
- display period – after the promotion the item must go, and someone has to remove it.
We always ask for the retailer's guidelines (planogram, media specification) before designing. Without them you risk part of the run going straight from the shelf into the bin.

Quantity, price per piece and packing for stores
For small POS the cost per piece is the sum of three things: printed material (priced per m²), contour cutting and finishing (arm, tape, hole), and packing. An indicative example from our price list:
500 wobblers 10 × 10 cm, UV-printed HIPS. Area: 500 × 0.01 m² = 5 m², at the 5–15 m² rate of approx. €20 – approx. €100 net in total. Cutting: perimeter approx. 0.4 m × 500 pcs = 200 linear metres of cut path × approx. €0.85 = approx. €170 net. Total approx. €270 net, i.e. approx. €0.55 per piece, excluding the arm and tape, which we add depending on the chosen solution.
One thing stands out: with small items you pay more for cutting than for printing. A simple shape (a circle, a rectangle with rounded corners) costs less than a complex product outline with notches. Prices are indicative – we confirm the final amount once we have the dimensions, shape and quantity.
If the materials go to many locations, kitting comes on top. Our store kit costs approx. €3.30 net for kitting and approx. €2.80 net for picking with multi-address shipping. Each store receives a parcel with the complete set and a contents list – we explain how to organise this in shipping to many stores.
When small POS works and when it is just noise
A wobbler on every third shelf stops being noticed. Shoppers get used to colourful circles just as they do to online banners. In our experience small POS works when it:
- has one message – new, -30%, 3 for 2; you cannot fit a whole offer on 10 cm,
- highlights a specific product, not the brand in general,
- runs for a short time – a few weeks of promotion, then a change,
- matches the rest of the campaign – the same visual on the store flyer, the stand and the shelf.
When you want to build a visible brand zone rather than just mark one product, shelf standees, shelf liners along the whole fixture or a display unit work better – we compare them in cardboard POS display. A broader look at how to arrange products and materials in a store is in our guide visual merchandising.
